Mycopunk Build Maker Guide: Design Builds From Scratch
No spreadsheet required. A repeatable workflow for designing Mycopunk builds yourself — weapon first, pattern second, ability grid last.
Last updated:
Copying a grid from a best builds list gets you playing fast. Designing your own gets you a build that survives every patch — because you know which pieces it actually needs.
There is no in-game build maker and no official planner tool. Making a build in Mycopunk is a paper exercise: decide the mechanic, budget the cells, then let drops fill the plan. Here is the workflow.
Step 1: Pick the Weapon and Its One Mechanic
Every build starts with one weapon and one upgrade that defines it. The arsenal runs from the Cycler and Jackrabbit up close to the DMLR and Diffraction Driver at range, with heavies like the G6 Street Sweeper and Laser Cannon in the full weapons list. Scan a weapon's upgrade pool in-game and find the piece whose text makes you want to build around it — a big exotic like Big Fat Doobie, or something oddball that changes how the gun fires.
Rules of thumb:
- One build-defining exotic per weapon. Two chunky mechanics fight for the same cells and rarely synergize.
- The rest of the grid supports the mechanic: ammo economy for burst builds, fire rate or reload for uptime builds.
- If nothing in the pool excites you, check the weapon tier list for what scales well, then design within it.
Step 2: Budget the Grid
Each weapon runs a hexagonal 7x7 board. Place the build-defining piece first, then spend what is left. Since 1.0 most stats scale with pattern size, so treat remaining cells as currency — the full pattern planning workflow covers placement order and infusion trade-offs.
| Cells left | Spend them on |
|---|---|
| 20+ | A second medium enabler plus stat sticks |
| 10-20 | One medium enabler or two slim ones |
| Under 10 | Slim stat pieces that feed the same mechanic |
Target the mechanic, not raw damage percent. A revolver build around single huge shots wants magazine and reload over generic damage, because the exotic already handles damage.
Step 3: Link the Ability Grid
Your employee's abilities run a separate grid that grows with player level from 5x5 up to 7x6. This is where builds stop being gun-only:
- Movement upgrades keep you alive long enough for the weapon build to come online — worth cells even when they add no damage.
- Look for upgrades that reference your weapon's behavior: cooldown reduction pairs with abilities you spam, and element-applying ability upgrades pair with elemental weapons.
- Employee upgrade trees in 1.0 start at Rare upgrades, and their stats are randomized per save — so your ability grid plan differs between saves. Check the actual rolls before committing.
- The four shared cryo upgrades (Ice Cube, Permafrost Wave, Splinter Virus, Ice Skates) equip one at a time on any employee — hold Q to activate. A cryo or elemental ability upgrade is an easy synergy slot.
A community tip that keeps proving out: if your weapon applies an element, run a grenade with the same element so every source feeds one status effect.
Step 4: Gear the Farming Toward the Plan
A plan without drops is just a wish list. Mycopunk gives you targeting tools:
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Weapon focus | From level 4, ping a weapon in your inventory to make its upgrades much more likely to drop |
| Clearance Certificates | Occasional drop; guarantees your next five drops target your equipped primary |
| Amalgamation Hunt | The boss hunt pays out 10 upgrades per clear |
| Crafting | Spend Saxonite to craft a random undiscovered upgrade for a chosen item — cheaper in Saxonite since 1.0 |
| Boosting | Spend resources to boost non-exotic upgrades for better stats |
Step 5: Know When to Rebuild
Rebuild triggers, in order of importance:
- A rotation tier unlocks (levels 3, 8, 16, 30). Re-fit the grid; a rotated piece often frees exactly the cells you were missing.
- The build-defining upgrade drops with a better roll. Compare shape as well as stats before swapping.
- A patch changes patterns or balance. 1.0 changed several build-defining patterns; patch-day grids need a re-socket pass.
- You switch primary weapons. Grids are per-weapon, so a new primary is a new plan — do not carry old assumptions over.
Is there a build maker or planner tool for Mycopunk?
No official one. Community spreadsheets and grid solvers circulate on the game's forums and wikis, but the in-game workflow — pick a mechanic, budget cells, farm with focus — covers most of what a planner would tell you.
How do I get upgrades for one specific weapon in Mycopunk?
Focus the weapon from your inventory at level 4 or higher, use Clearance Certificates when they drop, and craft missing pieces with Saxonite. The Amalgamation's 10-upgrade payout speeds up collection overall.
How many upgrades should one Mycopunk build use?
One build-defining piece plus three to six support upgrades is the usual shape. Space Optimization proves you can fit nine on one grid, but that is a packing challenge, not a combat build.
Do employee and weapon builds share upgrades?
No — grids are separate per weapon, per employee ability set and per grenade. You maintain several small builds, which is why the farming tools in step 4 matter.
Once your build works, push it against harder content: the leveling guide covers the threat ladder and Incursion, and the secret weapons page lists the odd tools worth a dedicated build of their own.
